Hotel design is most often dictated by brands but in Africa some local knowledge is winning out, as Steven Miller discusses in this TV show.

Hotel design briefs

The owners here, most of them really have their own ideas.  They really think they know the market and probably do.  The brands nowadays are so strict about their standards, whether it’s room size, whether it’s that room size generates what part of back of the house, what part of what public space, what type of meeting rooms, what type of ballroom, amount of parking.  And because of that it takes a lot for them to come to grips with a project, which we sit back because we don’t care, we’ll do whatever. I might come up with some suggestions as it relates to money versus what you’re building and so forth.  But how they agree or disagree on the standard is not my business.
